Hey Jerad, i just watched your comments on the turning off sync. i agree, i have had my sync disabled back in july when i got the 3G on the first day of sale. i really never had a problem with my Apps. during 2.0, or 2.0.1, just a small freeze or stall here and there, nothing a restart couldn’t fix, and i have had nine pages of Apps. at the time. but the 2.0.2 wrecked my phone, and i had to do a comeplete restore. i never liked having itunes sync on it’s on, that’s why i had it off, i would prefer for itunes to give me the freedom of (storing apps) (backing up apps) but not (syncing). when the sync is on, it does too many things at the same time, (example) when i’am on the “music” tab, i notice the itunes staus bar on top is running thru my Apps, at the same time. it shouldn’t do this, i’am on the music page, so i just want music preformed correct? you would think so. hopefuly the new itunes 8.0 would allow us more control over what we want to do. another thing is when i have an app. on the phone, and the same app. in my itunes library, if i uncheck that app. in the library, (itunes) sends me a warning, that it will erase the app. from my. that is not what i want itunes to do, i just want itunes to leave the app. alone, keep it on my phone, and keep it in my library, “preform no task” with the (unchecked app), “only preform tasks” on (checked apps). hope the itunes update will do this, and make it more user friendly.

What exactly does this option do? How is it different from instructing iTunes not to start syncing when you plug the iPhone in? If this option is selected, does this mean that no app data are backed up?

It does mean that no app data is backed up until you click sync and allow it to run its course. but this allows you to plug in your iphone and adjust settings before it goes into sync preventing it from being interrupted.

You can prevent syncing on a connect by connect basis by holding ctrl + shift in windows and command + option on a mac. Not sure if it is mentioned in the video because I can’t watch it at work, but just thought I would share the tip. The sync can get irritating if you just want to copy a new podcast or a few tracks to the iPhone but don’t want to wait 15 minutes for a full backup.

I had been suffering through the phone lock-ups and forced restores on what seemed to be every two days. The restore always took at least 2 hours and sometimes as long as 4 hours. Needless to say it was very frustrating to the point I feared doing a sync with the phone. Yes, I had turned off the auto updates and syncing but that didn’t stop any of the problems because I still wanted to sync new apps and music. I did notice that if something happened on the phone, such as an incoming call or text messege during the sync, the chance of it becomeing bricked was drastically increased. For the past 3 weeks I have be placing my phone into ‘airplane mode’ before doing a sync. Since doing this new procedure I have not had a single lock-up. It is annoying that my phone is basically disabled during this time but the sync usually takes less then 10 minutes. Maybe it’s not that the phone only does one process at a time but that it can only handle one process at a time.
Greg’s comment about user options in itunes is right on the mark. I would like to see check boxes on the sync screen that allows me to choose what will be synced. Music, Video, Podcasts, Apps, Backup, etc. I don’t make enough changes on my phone to warrent a backup every time I connect the phone to my computer. Heck, sometimes I’ll sync the phone 2 or 3 times a day and I sure don’t need the backup done that often. Once a week is reasonable. Let’s all dream of a better itunes. Or what ever happened to the simple days of drag and drop?

I don’t get it why the term ‘hard reset’ is used when it is actually a soft reset. Hard resets have always been used when a reset actually clears everything from the phones memory. A soft reset is like what you’re doing where it reboots the operating system with no data loss.

This is an IT term which I find Apple have messed around now confusing end users. Apple’s hard reset is called a ‘restore’. Oh dear…

Does anyone else have problems with the iPhone freezing if you get a text while you’re in the middle of a phone call, then when you go to end the call, you can’t close the text notification or end the call or unlock the screen in any way? This has happened to me three or four times and it’s really irritating to have to do a ‘hard reset’ just because a text came through while I was on a call.

I have not had many issues since the 2.1 upgrade. I still have the occasional freeze but it’s usually while inside an app. I don’t have issues with SMS during calls. I would suggest making sure your phone is up to date with the latest firmware release.

Hey Jerad! I have one additional help that may or may not help you. It's an application called Free Memory 1.4. It allows you to free up to 20 MB of memory. It's not always necessary to use, but when your phone is acting slow, try doing this rather than restarting. You'd be surprised of what 20 MB can do. It is 0.99 cents though, so its always wise to read the reviews.

    Hey everyone,

I’ve jailbroken/installed various apps to my iphone.

The issue is that after installing various third party apps, when I attempt to access the standard phone directly it freezes, is unresponsive, and then immediately closes. I can still use the phone to call via ‘contacts’ but I have lost the ability to directly dial numbers and all other functions that are accessible directly through the standard ‘phone’ app. I’ve tried restarting it and syncing it to Itunes. Didn’t clear up the problem. I'd prefer to not restore. I've installed this Iretro phone to use temporarily for direct dialing, but needless to say, it isn't so convenient. So, can anyone provide a solution or does anyone have any insights into this issue?

    Thanks, Automaton
